Hector “H3CZ” Rodriquez has reportedly reacquired the Optic Gaming brand from the Immortals Gaming Club. However, what will happen to the second Los Angeles spot is still up in the air. With the days until the start of the 2021 Call of Duty League dwindling, who could be entering the league? There are several theories as to who might buy the Call of Duty League spot, and the fan-favorite one is 100 Thieves.
100 Thieves exited Call of Duty after winning back-to-back tournaments and placing second at the 2019 Call of Duty Championship. Activision was set to take over and franchise Call of Duty esports to feature city-based teams. With a rumored 25 million dollar buy-in, 100 Thieves simply could not financially continue in Call of Duty.
Instead, they later invested in CS:GO by buying the Australian team Renegades. Unfortunately, 100 Thieves have recently released that CS:GO team and exited the scene. This is one of the sole reasons why fans believe that they could re-enter Call of Duty. They no longer have expensive contracts like CS:GO professionals Joakim “Jkaem” Myrbostad and Justin “Jks” Savage. The team now only has professional rosters in League of Legends, Valorant, and Fortnite.
100 Thieves Nadeshot “all-in” for CDL spot
According to Jake Lucky, multiple organizations were contacted regarding the purchase of the Optic Gaming Los Angeles spot. 100 Thieves CEO Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag was at the top of the list of those able to purchase the CDL spot. However, while Nadeshot was “all-in” to compete in Call of Duty again, he would have to convince his investors.
Before 100 Thieves excited CS:GO many fans thought that the CDL buyout would be too expensive. The rumored 25 million dollar buying plus salaries alone is a lot for one organization. However, now with CS:GO and their contracts are gone, that could open a slot for a new esports title. Besides the Call of Duty League, there are not a lot of options for 100 Thieves to invest in, especially with COVID-19 causing most esports to be played out online.
