Team Vitality has been issued a $10,000 fine by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC). This fine stems from Vitality’s breach of the ESIC Code.
During their matches against Team Liquid and Complexity, a TV was spotted in the background of the player cams which was showcasing the matches stream on Twitch. This is forbidden given the ability to obtain information from the footage and for teams to use it it to their advantage.
ESIC did state that they do not believe their was malicious intent.
“ESIC’s assessment of the VOD footage and player camera footage does not suggest that the players were given information derived from the stream or that they gained any advantage in their matches as a result of the Code violation by the organisation. Team Vitality’s management has accepted responsibility for the breach,” ESIC said in a statement.
Since the revelation, some have called for Vitality’s disqualification from the event rather than a fine. ESIC also covered that as part of their announcement which you can read below.
“ESIC’s decision to fine the organisation rather than disqualify, suspend or ban the team is predicated on ESIC’s review of the evidence which indicates that taking an action in the alternative would have been a disproportionate and unfair outcome for the negligence of the organisation’s staff, who, whilst negligent, had no intentional malice in their actions.”
ESIC will now be selecting a charity to which it will donate the money obtained via the fine to Team Vitality as part of their Code of Conduct.
