A Sword & Shield Player Just Taught Us How To Properly Nickname Pokémon

A Sword and Shield player just revealed what we should be nicknaming our Pokémon, and it’s a really cool idea we wish we had thought of first.

Pokémon Sword and Shield have been on the market for more than two months. Chances are players who bought one of the games on release day, or even those who received the game for Christmas, are loaded down with Pokémon by this point. Trawling through them deciding who will be a part of your core team and which Pokémon you want to nurture and train is probably becoming a bit of a chore.

There are also more Pokémon than ever, even if Sword and Shield‘s Pokédex has been limited. That’s a lot of information to keep in your head in terms of move sets, when Pokémon evolve, what they evolve into, strengths and weaknesses… need we go on?

Redditor Plebian_Donkey_Konga has come up with an innovative way to take one of those things off of trainers’ minds and put it right there in black and white. When a trainer catches a Pokémon, they are given the option of christening that creature with a unique nickname. Plebian_Donkey_Konga suggests forgoing giving the Pokémon an amusing pun as a name, and instead naming it after the level at which it evolves, or the item needed to evolve it.

Pretty smart, huh? No more searching online to remember what level a Pokémon evolves, or trying to hold the levels of evolution of hundreds of Pokémon in your head. Now, we hear what some trainers might believe is the number one problem with this method. That you’ll then be stuck with a bunch of Pokémon bearing pretty weird names. Not ideal for going into battle with, especially after they have evolved.

Well, that’s not an issue. Unlike older Pokémon games, Game Freak allows trainers to change their Pokémon’s nicknames as much as they like. So once your Pokémon has reached the level it needs to get to in order to evolve, you can then change its name. Whether that be back to what it’s supposed to be called, or giving it one of those clever nicknames we alluded to earlier, well, that part is up to you.
