Barry Keoghan is officially in The Batman. That's according to an updated version of Warner Bros. official movie description that was updated on December 17.
The initial description had Keoghan playing a character named Stanley Merkel, who was commissioner Gordon's first partner upon entering the Gotham Police Department. However, as noted by GamesRadar, fans now think that Keoghan will actually be cast as the Joker thanks to the international trailer.
On top of that, The Hollywood Reporter previously stated that Warner Bros. was testing two different versions of the movie: one with "a certain character" and one without. The studio has since reportedly made a decision on which version to proceed with and with Keoghan officially in, fans think that means so too is the Joker.
But Warner Bros. is keeping that info a secret for now. Besides Keoghan's name on the docket, there are no official sources confirming who the actor will portray. This isn't Keoghan's first foray into superhero films, though. He recently starred as the mind-controlling hero Druig in Marvel's Eternals. Keoghan also appeared in The Green Knight and Calm with Horses.
Director Matt Reeves seems to have a very different take on Batman. In a recent interview, Reeves revealed that he's basing his version of Bruce Wayne on deceased grunge rock star, Kurt Cobain. Reeves apparently likes to listen to music when he writes, and one of the songs that he listened to while writing The Batman was Nirvana's "Something In The Way." So instead of a playboy billionaire, Reeves' version of Wayne will be a recluse.
Actor Robert Pattinson, who will play Batman in the film, also noted that this version of the Caped Crusader will be way different from what fans have come to expect. "Bruce has been hiding away. He’s not really a socialite at all. He’s building all these little contraptions and things, just with Alfred.”
The Batman arrives in theatres on March 4, 2022.
