A 40-minute-long presentation all about the future of PS5 has been announced, but exactly what’s being shown is a complete mystery.
Since Sony skipped E3 again this year, fans had expected the company to hold its own E3-like State of Play presentation either around the same time or afterwards. And while there was one in July, it mostly featured already announced projects and lacked any major reveals.
It had been rumoured that a big PlayStation presentation would take place in August, which would feature a new trailer for the sequel to 2018’s God Of War. And now Sony has announced not a State of Play, but a PlayStation Showcase for September 9.
Details on the showcase are incredibly scarce, but it sounds like it’s the big one fans have been hoping to see for months. All Sony says about it on the PlayStation Blog is that it will run for 40 minutes and contain updates from PlayStation Studios and other developers for games releasing this year and beyond.
Aside from that, Sony isn’t giving any hints as to which specific games will appear, only adding that its new VR hardware, which is rumoured to be out by Christmas 2022, will be absent.
The date may have been off, but this could very well be the aforementioned rumoured showcase. So, there’s a chance fans will get a proper first look at the new God Of War, since the source of the rumour has leaked accurate information in the past.
So far, all that’s been revealed about the God Of War sequel is a logo and that it’ll release for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Fan speculation points to its full title being God Of War: Ragnarök, but this has yet to be officially confirmed by Sony.
At the very least, some first-party games will be making an appearance considering PlayStation Studios is specifically named as part of the showcase. As a reminder, this is the name for Sony’s collection of major first-party studios, including Santa Monica (God Of War), Naughty Dog (The Last Of Us), and Insomniac (Ratchet & Clank).
Some PlayStation exclusives that have already been announced that could make an appearance during the showcase include Kena: Bridge Of Spirits (which releases September 21), Horizon Forbidden West (February 2022), and Gran Turismo 7 (which only has a 2022 release window).
The PlayStation Showcase is scheduled for September 9 at 9pm BST / 1pm PT.
