Talk about a blast from the past. Due to the upcoming 15th anniversary of Guild Wars, ArenaNet has launched a surprise update for the PC original that adds some extra content. While the actual celebration will take place on April 28, 2020, players can currently log back into their accounts and receive some new gear to deck their characters out with…if they can even remember their passwords.
Taking place on Embark Beach, the Ancient Anniversary Weaponsmith has been updated with the new “Anniversary” set. The design of these weapons may be familiar, but they are boasting attributes that weren’t previously available. Players will also be able to acquire a “Proof of Triumph” from the weaponsmith that will spawn some end-game foes and bosses in late-game maps. Successfully defeating them and bringing back their drop will get you an exclusive PvE skill.
Probably the only successful rival to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, Guild Wars launched in 2005 with a fairly generous business model. A single purchase was all you needed to play the game for life. Not going with monthly subscriptions, there were some drawbacks to how the game played (it was basically all instanced dungeons), but it was still a solid MMO with a ton of support.
Getting an update some 15 years later is not something I would have expected. I don’t know if I have the desire to reinstall Guild Wars, but I’m sure dedicated fans will be delighted by this news.
