EA Details New FieldSense Mechanics For Madden NFL 23

Madden NFL 23 is coming later this summer with quite a few changes under the hood and on the cover. To start, Madden himself will grace the cover of NFL 23 for the first time in over 20 years, with three different images depending on which version of NFL 23 you buy. And inside the game, EA is promising a revolutionary new technology that will offer unprecedented control over each and every play.

That technology is called FieldSense, and it sounds like it has a lot to do with FIFA 22’s HyperMotion technology. Just as with FIFA 22, FieldSense is a new "animation branching technology" that combines professional motion capture with machine learning to create organic looking movements on the field. But on top of that, FieldSense also "redefines the physical interactions during the play allowing players to fight for every inch and change the outcome of tackles – whether mid-air or on the ground."

In addition to the new physics, FieldSense will provide players with the ability to change direction “on a dime” while controlling the ball, as well as more accurate passing. Core gameplay systems have also been improved, including zone coverage, the pass rush, and containing mobile quarterbacks.

Those looking for a visual refresh will be happy to note that NFL 23 will have a totally rebuilt roster of players and coaches made up of “hundreds” of all-new body scans. NFL’s popular Face of the Franchise: The League mode also returns with five skill positions, which includes cornerback for the first time.

According to EA’s press release, there’s also "all-new Free Agency and Contract enhancements, improvements to Scouting, and updates to the Hub and Trade Logic." Expect more details on these features to be disclosed in the coming weeks.

If that’s enough to get your pre-order, EA is promising players three-day early access, 4,600 Madden Points, free upgrades to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, and early access challenges for those that buy the game before August 18. And if you buy before July 22, you’ll get an All-Madden Team Elite Player item.

Madden NFL 23 launches on August 19.
