Double bosses are quickly becoming a staple of Fromsoftware’s repertoire, be it Ornstein and Smough in the original Dark Souls, or the Abyss Watchers in Dark Souls 3, players have learned to expect these battles. Elden Ring is no different, offering a slew of double bosses to test your fighting — and juggling — skills.

The Fell Twins is a rather unique boss. Blocking your path to the Divine Tower of East Altus, you must defeat the pair to activate Mohg and Morgott’s Great Runes. With a boss area that is nostalgic of the Four Kings in the original Dark Souls and some great rewards, this fight is one you will not want to miss.

Fell Twins Overview

The Fell Twins can be located on the bridge leading to the Divine Tower of East Altus. Unlike many bosses in Elden Ring, it will not be immediately obvious that you are entering a boss room. Rather, as you begin to cross the bridge, a black fog will engulf you, filling the screen until you are transported to an abyss. This will be the boss room.

This fight consists of two foes, an Omen with an axe, and one with a sword that has a series of holy attacks. Thankfully, unlike many double fights in the Soulsborne franchise, the Fell Twins typically allow you to fight them one on one — if you get your positioning right that is.

As this boss is essentially two normal mobs with boosted health pools, it should not be too tough. However, some strategy is required.

Axe Twin Attacks

Quick Kick

Makes a fast movement toward you and then kicks out.

Counter: This can be rolled away from, by moving to either side or through, by rolling forward.

Grab Attack

The twin will run toward you, looking for what seems like a hug. This attack is somewhat delayed and deals serious damage.

Counter: Here you want to be patient, move backward until the animation is almost done, then roll. If you panic, you can easily be fooled by this attack’s delay.

Punch

The twin will raise its left arm into the air and then jump toward you while simultaneously throwing a punch.

Counter: Use I-frames here and roll through the attack.

Axe Combo

Using its axe, the twin will unleash a series of melee attacks, beginning with an overhead slash.

Counter: One of the slower moves in the twin's arsenal, this one is avoided by rolling through each swing.

Jump and Slam

The twin will leap into the air before slamming into the ground.

Counter: Roll backward at the last second.

Sword Twin Attacks

While the twin with the sword has a similar set of attacks to its brother, it can also let out a series of holy attacks.

Holy Flame Breath

Spewing a line of holy flames from its mouth, the twin can deal some serious damage with this attack.

Counter: Roll to either side

Holy Charge And Orbs

To activate its holy attacks, the twin will charge up before releasing a series of orbs that can home in on your position.

Counter: The charge doubles as an AOE, so run when he begins the animation. For the orbs, unlock from the boss and then sprint either left or right.

Holy Sword Attack

Twin plants his sword in the ground, letting out even more holy orbs.

Counter: Roll away from the slam, and then for the orbs, react as you did for his last attack.

Strategy

Both the Melee and Ranged strategies for this fight are more or less the same. Firstly, the fight will begin with the axe twin running toward you. Allow him to do so, as to not involve his brother early in the fight.

Once you have engaged with the axe twin, you will want the fight to end quite quickly, to avoid involving the sword twin. With that in mind, weapons that deal high stagger damage, such as greatswords or the Moonveil’s L2 are very useful here. The axe twin is only capable of melee attacks, so dodge as explained above and take him out.

Once the sword twin joins in on the fun, things will get a little more complicated so try and fell his brother before then. Defeating the sword twin will require a bit more thought, but it's ultimately a very similar fight. Keep your eye out for him charging his holy attacks, or coating his blade in magic, as this indicates a ranged attack is on its way.

A good tactic here is to use attacks that knock the twins out of their animations, such as heavy or jumping blows. If you are aware of these cues and have already taken out his brother, this fight will go smoothly, giving you access to that sweet, sweet great rune up ahead. If you are struggling, remember that summoning is available here. However, if your NPC summon runs to the second twin, it can make the fight a little harder.

General Tips

  • Take on one at a time.
  • Both twins are weak to slash.
  • Both are weak to most status effects.
  • Use your summon to even the odds.
  • The boss is strong against holy attacks.
