Final Fantasy 16 takes a more action-oriented approach, as Clive Rosfield aims to take revenge on the Dark Eikon Ifrit after tragedy befalls his family.
The game is described as an “epic dark fantasy” where the fate of the land and its people are decided by the “mighty Eikons and the Dominants who wield them”.
Square Enix reveals more: “This is the tale of Clive Rosfield, a warrior granted the title ‘First Shield of Rosaria’ and sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the dominant of the Phoenix.
“Before long, Clive will be caught up in a great tragedy and swear revenge on the Dark Eikon Ifrit, a mysterious entity that brings calamity in its wake.”
Final Fantasy 16 features a far grittier storyline than previous games, as well as increased focus on action-based combat.
While it’s something of a departure from past releases, the review scores have been kind to Square’s new action RPG.
Final Fantasy 16 currently has a Metacritic score of 88% based on more than 100 reviews.
The vast majority of reviewers appreciate the new combat system and storyline, but criticise the dull sidequests.
In IGN’s 9/10 Final Fantasy 16 review, the writer praises the story, character and world building, as well as the new Active Time Lore feature, which gives you a lowdown about the characters and locations during cutscenes.
“Featuring fast, reflex driven, action heavy combat, Final Fantasy 16 is certainly a departure from what fans may expect out of a Final Fantasy game, but its excellent story, characters, and world building are right up there with the best the series has to offer, and the innovative Active Time Lore feature should set a new standard for how lengthy, story-heavy games keep players invested in its world.”
