Goodman Games Reincarnates Classic Castle Amber Adventure For Fifth Edition

Tabletop roleplaying game publisher Goodman Games recently announced the addition of the classic Dungeons & Dragons module of yore Castle Amber to its Original Adventures Reincarnated series. Castle Amber marks the fifth classic D&D module Goodman Games has brought into the 21st century and updated for Fifth Edition, which is now available on the Goodman Games webstore for $49.99.

Along with the Castle Amber announcement, Goodman also announced three new third-party adventures, and an updated fourth one, each compatible with Goodman’s Dungeon Crawl Classic RPG line. Isles of the Celts, 2 Worm 2 Furious, The Forgotten Rites of the Moldering Dead, and The Lesser Key to the Celestial Legion are all also now available on the Goodman Games’ webstore.

Original Adventures Reincarnated #5: Castle Amber is Goodman’s Fifth Edition conversion of the original X2: Castle Amber, published in 1981 and written by Tom Moldvay, who also wrote the second edition of the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set published in 1980. According to the announcement, a “full fifth edition conversion of the original adventure is included, as well as brand new additional adventure encounters and an expanded Castle Amber.” The adventure also comes in hardcover this time, with “high-quality scans of the original first edition adventure module, plus commentary by renowned contemporary game designers and writers.”

There is also an excellent two-part dev diary covering Goodman’s Castle Amber conversion, written by one of the conversionists, Michael Curtis (Tim Wadzinski is the other). Check out Castle Amber Designer’s Diary #1: We Have Always Lived in the Castle and Castle Amber Designer’s Diary #2: The Magnificent Ambers for a great read into the process of updating Castle Amber to Fifth Edition rules.

The three new adventures Goodman added to its impressive TTRPG library are part of the DCCRPG series:

  • 2 Worm 2 Furious is a level 0 and higher adventure/mini-setting for four to six players, and involves chasing a mutating god grub.
  • Isles of the Celts is a sandbox guide and “an expansion of the campaign world presented in the Pax Lexque Campaign Guide.”
  • The Forgotten Rites of the Moldering Dead is a 96-page sourcebook of “dead, un-dead, and rotting” creatures, and includes new spells, a new class, and two ready-to-play adventures.

The Lesser Key to the Celestial Legion is the updated 32-page sourcebook “to add religious depth to your RPG campaign”. Each of the above products is available in print and PDF forms on Goodman’s webstore.
