GTA 6 release date news: New ‘leaked’ Grand Theft Auto image has fans conflicted

There's a new image doing the rounds this weekend which once again has fans questioning whether the first image of GTA 6 has leaked ahead of a possible 2020 release date.

It’s been over six years since GTA 5 was released, and with sales this week confirmed to creep past the 115 million sales mark, it's no surprise Rockstar will have a Grand Theft Auto 6 in the development pipeline.

Quite when that could arrive is the big mystery. But with a new generation of consoles on the horizon in the form of PS5 and Xbox Scarlett, plus an overabundance of chatter increasing with every month, something must surely be brewing at Rockstar.

Either way, there's almost definitely an appetite for something new, regardless of how well GTA VI and GTA Online continues to rake in the cash.

And as we've already seen this week, a series of news stories pertaining to Rockstar India has more or less poured gasoline on the fire, first with a Rockstar Linkedin job listing asking for Game Testers, and another with a Rockstar Employee who's LinkedIn profile mentioned working on an 'Unannounced AAA game'.

But the latest rumour, as mentioned, concerns a new image doing the rounds which shows what we'll assume is meant to be a next-gen take on a Miami style setting.

Real or not, it's certainly playing up that modern GTA Vice City vibe.

When will GTA 6 release?

23000+ VOTES SO FAR

The image in question comes via (we think) a Brazillian YouTuber known as @diegogigaton, before making their way to Reddit and the GTA forums where fans have been pouring over every detail.

Most fan reactions suggest the image is fake, although, there doesn't appear to be too much explanation as to why, beyond a few people suggesting some cars have been used in GTA 5.

Though, as we've highlighted before, there's every chance that Rockstar might be seeding GTA 6 cars in GTA Online. That's another story for another article though because we're focussing on this image.

There are also a few responses from fans who are more willing to remain open-minded, perhaps recalling how fans more or less wrote off the famous GTA 5 image that leaked before release in 2013, which actually turned out to be real. You'll see that image below.

Some have also pointed to the fact that the minimap appears to be taken from Red Dead as both a sign that it is, and possibly isn't a fake.

On one hand, it could be a sloppy slip on the part of a leaker trying to deceive. On the other hand, Red Dead 2 used the GTA 5 minimap for testing, so maybe Rockstar are simply reusing bits during alpha testing.

So for the time being, we're going to place this 'leak' in the 'needs more scrutiny' pile, because for now it doesn't seem it's as simple as saying one way or another.

As we've seen previously with GTA 6 image leaks earlier this year, sometimes you need more time to truly analyse the image.

Equally, as we saw with several Bully 2 image 'leaks' from earlier this year which turned out to be fake, it's more than possible to mislead with a carefully doctored image.

Despite the fact that Rockstar is continuing to release sizable updates to both Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5, with no 'core' game known to be in development, it's likely that between now and the next console generation there will be plenty of leaks, rumours and tomfoolery.

But at this stage the various development teams at Rockstar must surely be working on something.

More so, how could Scottish studio Ruffian Games be involved, who also recently announced they were looking for new hires to work on some "unspecified titles" with Rockstar Games.

Time will tell, but for now let us know in the comments what you think about this latest Grand Theft Auto 6 image leak.
