The Halo MCC update for this week is already going live across platforms, Microsoft has confirmed today. While the original Halo 3 PC release time was set for later in the day, around 6pm in the UK, it appears things have started launching much earlier. A new post from the Community Director at 343 Industries has confirmed that today’s Halo Master Chief Collection update is now live for most gamers.
However, while PC players will be able to start playing Halo 3 earlier than they first thought, it should be noted that some services may not come online until later on July 14, 2020.
A message from the 343 Industries Community Team adds: “Yep, Halo 3 PC and the MCC update are now live a bit early.
“It’s been nearly 13 years, we figure you’ve waited long enough. Note some services may still be coming online ahead of our “official” launch tomorrow AM.”
PC players can now add Halo 3 to their PC libraries at an additional cost, bringing the full install size to the following for each platform:
- Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass for PC (Beta) – MCC owners will receive a 20.84GB update with the full install being 93.15GB.
- Steam – MCC Bundle Owners: A 17.6GB update with Halo: Reach, H:CEA, H2:A, and Halo 3 being about 124.5 installed.
- Xbox – MCC will receive a 23.38GG update with the full install being 127.76.
The above-listed services are where Halo 3 can be played on PC and consoles, and it’s not the only big change going live today for the Halo community. The fan-favourite Forge tools are expanding to new games as part of the wider Master Chief Collection patch going live today.
From today, Halo: Reach, Halo 2: Anniversary, and Halo 3’s Forge will all be added to MCC on PC. Additionally, Halo 3’s Forge will be updated (on both platforms) to include new features like phased physics, coordinate snap, rotation, rotation snap, and increased budget, and brand-new pieces.

HALO 3 CUSTOMISATION
As many of you saw in the recent Halo 3 flight, updated customization will be available for Halo 3. This includes being able to select specific armor pieces separately, as opposed to the full set system we had before, as well as displaying your emblem on your shoulder and armor detail colors in-game.
HALO: CE CUSTOMISATION
For the first time ever, Halo: CE will have officially supported customization options including Weapon Skins, Vehicle Skins, and Visors. A player’s custom Weapon Skins and Vehicle Skins will be applied whenever they are in control of them. These skins will stay applied, even after dropping the weapon or exiting the vehicle, up until a new player gains control of them.
While we’re all excited about these additions, we’re aware that some players may prefer to keep that original CE feel. To support those players, we’ll be providing the option to toggle skins on or off in their settings.
SEASON 2 & CHALLENGES
In addition to Halo 3, July 14 also brings MCC’s Season 2 and our new Challenge System. Season 2 contains over 100 new customization items, which can now be unlocked via Campaign, Firefight, and Multiplayer gameplay and challenges. Based on community feedback, we are also making it so that players can choose the order in which they can unlock season items in any given tier. You will still need to unlock all items in your first tier before accessing the next one, but the order is now up to you.
This new Challenge System will also neatly tie into our events like the Yappening and Winter Contingency. Before, players would have to read about the events online and then wait for a manual grant for their reward, without any sort of way to track if they had successfully met the criteria in-game. Now, players will be able to see their progress and immediately get rewarded when they complete the criteria for our in-game events.
