Bond is Back, as the makers of Hitman tease their new surprise project – an origin story created purely for video games.
IO Interactive said they were announcing a new game today, but we don’t think anyone expected it be the first new James Bond game in eight years.
The game has the working title of Project 007 and judging by the teaser trailer, and the fact IO are still recruiting staff to work on it, development has likely only just started, but it’s described as a ‘wholly original Bond story’ – so probably not featuring whoever takes over from Daniel Craig.
The brief description on the official website says that, ‘players will step into the shoes of the world’s favourite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story’. (Apparently Casino Royale doesn’t count.)
IO Interactive will publish the game themselves, which is a major undertaking for them and it’s surprising that the licence holders would hand over the rights to such a relatively small developer, with little publishing experience.
That means IO’s pitch for the game must’ve been pretty impressive, but then given how many nods and homages there have been in the Hitman games it does seem very much like it would be their sort of thing.
The only indication of what formats it’ll be released on is that it’ll launch on ‘modern systems and platforms’. Combined with the fact that work only just seems to have begun that probably means it’ll be Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation (and PC) only.
‘It’s true that once in a while, the stars do align in our industry,’ says IO’s Hakan Abrak. ‘Creating an original Bond game is a monumental undertaking and I truly believe that IO Interactive, working closely with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can deliver something extremely special for our players and communities.
‘Our passionate team is excited to unleash their creativity into the iconic James Bond universe and craft the most ambitious game in the history of our studio.’
Although now that we know who has the video game licence, after Activision gave it up in 2012, fans will immediately be wondering whether some kind of deal can be done between Nintendo, Microsoft, and IO to enable a GoldenEye 007 remake or remaster.
Because that would be almost as good as a new game…
