The next Oddworld remake is looking even more impressive than New ‘N’ Tasty, although it still doesn’t have a release date.
It’s a been long, slow process to remaster or remake all the Oddworld games, but 2014’s New ‘N’ Tasty showed that the wait is worth it, and that looks like it applies to Soulstorm as well.
Oddworld: Soulstorm is a remake of 1998 PS1 game Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, which is technically the second game in the series but officially regarded as a spin-off.
That’s because the original used basically the same graphics and gameplay as its predecessor, but Soulstorm seems to be notably more advanced than New ‘N’ Tasty – which was a remake of the first game.
Although the gameplay is still 2D there seems to be much more use of a 3D camera than in New ‘N’ Tasty, giving it a more dynamic feel.
Abe’s Exoddus did always play more or less the same as the first one, although rescuing your fellow slaves was more complex in that they could have different attributes such as being scared, angry, or even blind.
There’s still no release date for Soulstorm but it’s aiming for early 2020 and will be at E3 next month.
It’s still unclear if and when the developer will make a brand-new game, but since the originally intended saga of four mainline games has never been completed that’s always been the hope.
