Original Ghost Of Tsushima vanishes from PSN ahead of Director’s Cut release

For whatever reason, you can no longer purchase the original release of Ghost Of Tsushima, at least not digitally.

Later this week, a director’s cut of Sucker Punch’s samurai game Ghost Of Tsushima will release for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Not only is this an opportunity for fans to revisit the game with new enhancements and content, but it’s also a chance for Sony and Sucker Punch to attract newcomers who skipped the original PS4 release last year.

In fact, it’s now the only way for new players to experience the game. Initially spotted by Wiredup Report, the original version of Ghost Of Tsushima has vanished from the PlayStation Store.

If you search for the game on either the PS4, PS5, or the PlayStation Store website, only the director’s cut appears, suggesting that Sony has opted to remove the original release.

Sony itself hasn’t commented on the removal or why this has happened, but it’s easy to guess what could have motivated the decision. Most likely it’s been done to further encourage players in purchasing the director’s cut.

This doesn’t mean it’s completely impossible to buy the original PS4 release. Physical copies of the game can still be found at select retailers or purchased second hand.

But Sony’s decision is unlikely to be met without complaint. The director’s cut already sparked some contention when it was confirmed that anyone who owns Ghost Of Tsushima will still need to pay to upgrade to the director’s cut.

It can be argued that there’s no reason for anyone to purchase the original release anymore thanks to the existence of the director’s cut. After all, it is the exact same game but with additional content, namely a new location to explore and a new story chapter.

Sony’s decision doesn’t come as that surprising either considering it once intended on shutting down the digital stores for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita consoles. It only reversed its decision (for the PS3 and Vita stores at least) due to heavy backlash.

Ghost Of Tsushima: Director’s Cut releases for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on August 20.
