Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear Games has given us our best look yet at the upcoming December expansion The Forbidden Sanctum in a new live stream, outlining all of the new additions that will be coming to the game. On top of the main expansion, players will get to try out new modes, unique weapons and items, and a whole bunch of endgame improvements.
More specifically, the biggest addition is a new three-month challenge league in which you'll be tasked with exploring an ancient sanctum that is tucked away underneath Fellshrine Ruins. Just like with all spooky ancient sanctums, there's an evil presence filling the place with dangerous enemies you need to overcome, as you make your way through each room looting its treasures.
As for the smaller new additions, if you're playing as a melee character then The Forbidden Sanctum is just the expansion for you. Two skill gems will also be introduced, giving melee characters access to powerful new abilities called Volcanic Fissure and Frozen Legion, alongside a bunch of new Vaal Gems for existing skills.
There's also something being added if you're looking for a fresher, much more challenging Path of Exile playthrough. Ruthless Mode can be activated during the character creation screen and is about as welcoming as it sounds. Instead of the usual experience, items will be much scarcer, adding an extra dimension to the game and each fight you get into.
On top of all that, The Forbidden Sanctum will add a bunch of unique items, monster modifiers, balance changes, new buffed weapons, and a whole lot more. If you want to get deep into the nitty-gritty, Grinding Gear Games also held a live stream going in-depth into the new content which you can find on their YouTube channel.
As for when you can jump in and play around with all these new additions, Path of Exile: The Forbidden Sanctum launches on December 9 on PC, but all you PlayStation and Xbox owners will have to wait until December 14 to join in.
