PGA Tour 2K21 announces August release date with Justin Thomas as cover star

After years without an official PGA Tour game, 2K has picked up the licence and got the creators of The Golf Club to make the new game.

After a series of teases, 2K has officially unveiled PGA Tour 2K21, the first in a new series of golf games now that they own the official licence.

The game will be released on 21 August for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Stadia, with PGA Tour pro Justin Thomas as the cover athlete.

The game is being developed by HB Studios, the team behind the much celebrated The Golf Club games, effectively transforming that series into an officially licensed PGA game with 15 real-world courses.

The game will also include 11 other PGA Tour pros, who will feature in the campaign mode, while you can create your own customised avatar and dress them with real world brands including Adidas, Polo Ralph Lauren, Malbon Golf, Callaway Golf, Bridgestone Golf, and TaylorMade Golf.

There’s also a course designer to create your own greens and fairways and a range of tutorials and advanced options for different levels of players. Plus a variety of local and online multiplayer modes, including Alt-Shot, Stroke Play, Skins and 4-Player Scramble.

You’ll also be able to run tournaments and seasons from the virtual clubhouse, setting your own entry rules and handicaps.

Given how popular The Golf Club is there’s little doubt PGA Tour 2K21 will be a good game, but a major concern will be how it handles microtransactions, given how unashamedly exploitative NBA 2K20 is in that regard.

There’s already a pre-order offer for PGA Tour 2K21 where you get special in-game Adidas apparel and pre-ordering the digital deluxe edition will also net you a golden putter and driver, plus a wedge of in-game currency.

That shows that microtransactions for cosmetic items are definitely in the game, although 2K insists you can also unlock them by playing the game and that no additional purchase is necessary.
