The makers of Bayonetta are planning to announce at least one new game in 2019, as they promise an ‘incredibly important year’.
Despite making critically acclaimed titles such as Bayonetta, Vanquish, and Metal Gear Rising, PlatinumGames never really had a major hit until 2017’s NieR:Automata.
The game’s unexpected international success raised their profile considerably, and this year they’ve Astral Chain coming out for Nintendo Switch, along with Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall for Square Enix some time, presumably, next year.
They’ve also got a couple of mobile titles on the boil, but beyond that it’s not clear what else they might be working on at the moment. But a recent interview seems to point towards more than one major new project.
Speaking to website VGC, studio head Atsushi Inaba said the company is midway through working on another unannounced title which, ‘has never been done before’.
Inaba gives no clue as to what the game is but mentions that the company is currently building a ‘new foundation’ for itself and changing the methodology of how it creates and design games.
This will apparently affect Bayonetta 3 – which still hasn’t been seen in public yet – and the new unannounced title.
One of Platinum’s main goals at the moment is to move more into self-publishing and to make sure it owns all its own IP, which it has rarely been able to do in the past.
‘2019 will be an incredibly important year for us,’ said Inaba. ‘Without speaking directly to the number of titles we may or may not announce, I can say it’s going to be a year of some major new approaches, new challenges and new methods for us.’
That seems to imply that there could be more than one brand new annoucement this year, and with E3 coming up there’s a good chance at least one of them might happen next month.
