The difference in graphical horsepower between the PS5 and Xbox Series X doesn’t have a significant impact on game development, according to a Dirt 5 developer. Mike Moreton, a lead designer at Codemasters, claims multiplatform releases won’t change much between either console.
“From development and gameplay perspectives, it doesn’t really have an impact,” Moreton said in an interview with GamingBolt. “When it comes to tuning, tweaking and optimizations at the end of a game, it might mean slightly less work for one platform.”
The Xbox Series X is the stronger console between the two overall, with a staggering 12 teraflop GPU being the crown jewel in its repertoire. Though the PS5 is no slouch by any means, boasting a 10.8 teraflop GPU of its own. A slight difference for sure, but it’s still there.
Moreton’s opinion is quite interesting considering that Dirt 5 is not only multiplatform but cross-generation as well—coming to the PS4 and Xbox One in addition to next-generation hardware. It’s a game with scalability in mind and for a good reason. Even the Xbox Series S, the lower-spec iteration of Microsoft’s new console, only has a 4 teraflop GPU. These spec differences will most impact multiplatform developers, so it’s good to hear that porting between both consoles should have a negligible impact on performance and graphical fidelity.
Obviously, the GPU in either machine is only one hardware component affecting performance, though. For example, both machines’ processor is nearly identical, with the Xbox Series X sporting an 8x Zen 2 Core at 3.8GH and the PS5 an 8-core 3.5 GHz AMD Zen 2 respectively. Additionally, the PS5 sports the faster SSD between the two, so Sony has a leg up over Microsoft in technical aspects of their own.
Time will tell if Moreton’s take is spot-on or not as the generation goes on, but for now, at least, things sound good. Regardless of whatever machine you pick up this November, both should dust multiplatform games with ease.
