Rainbow Six Siege next gen upgrade is free, runs at 120fps and 4K

The Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions of Rainbow Six Siege are due out this year and they’re free if you already own the game.

Although it was announced some time ago, Ubisoft has now officially confirmed Rainbow Six Siege for the Xbox Series X, Series S, and PlayStation 5 – and if you already own an existing version it won’t cost you a penny.

As you’d expect, the next gen versions look better too, running at 120fps and 4K resolution, although Ubisoft never actually showed any footage. There was no mention of ray-tracing but it will have ‘render scaling’, whatever that may be.

There was no exact release date for the new versions but they will be out this year and as long as you’re moving from the same family of consoles (i.e. Xbox to Xbox or PlayStation to PlayStation) you can bring across all your progression and in-game content.

The new versions will also be cross-generational when it comes to online play, so Xbox One can play with Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 4 with 5. You can’t cross the streams when it comes to Xbox and PlayStation though.

The news was announced during the Ubisoft Forward event, where the new Operation Shadow Legacy season also got a promo, that’s the one with Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher in it – he’s available now if you have a year five pass or you can unlock him next week if you don’t.

Rainbow Six’s developers have always been adamant that there’ll be no Rainbow Six Siege 2 anytime soon and they do seem to be sticking to that.

That doesn’t meant that there won’t be other Rainbow Six games but the sci-fi themed Rainbow Six Quarantine wasn’t mentioned at Ubisoft Forward, which is starting to get worrying as so far all we’ve had out of it was a brief pre-rendered teaser at E3 2019.
