Rare's Everwild is a "real mess" according to GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb.
Everwild was revealed back in 2019 as Rare's next big project following Sea of Thieves. It's been pretty much completely silent since then, although insiders have previously reported that it's undergone a complete reboot since its announcement, which is why it's been so quiet.
Now, according to GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, Everwild is a "real mess". Speaking on the XboxEra podcast, Grubb opened up about the state of some of Xbox's big exclusives. During the talk, Grubb talks about Everwild and rebuts some recent comments from Xbox saying that the reports are "a little extreme".
Grubb said, "Everwild is a real mess. They try to talk diplomatically about it when they’re in public, like “people hear things about the creative director leaving and things getting rebooted and that it's 'overstated'. it’s not that overstated. This is not me just using colourful descriptions — the people working on that game don’t really know what’s going on with that game. That’s how much of a mess it is right now."
When talking about how some have said the reports are "overstated", it seems like Grubb is fighting back against comments made by Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty, who spoke about Everwild earlier in the year. He said, "What is Rare known for? They're known for creating new IP and creating worlds. I'll say when you look at it from the outside, when you hear words like 'reset' and maybe 'restructure,' those are probably a little more definite and a little more extreme than what really happens as a game comes to life."
Although Matt Booty's comments seemed to indicate Everwild is simply going through the same development process as other big titles, Grubb seems to think that it's in a much worse position than that, arguing that even Rare doesn't really know what to do with it. It's unlikely we'll find out more about the situation until Rare reveals more about the game.
