The fourth tall tale you will be tasked to complete in Season 3: A Pirate’s Life in Sea of Thieves is called The Dark Brethren. You will follow Jack Sparrow on yet another adventure that relates back to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and this time Davy Jones is involved. You will be tasked with solving puzzles, finding journals, revealing murals, and battling enemies.

It is easy to miss something along the way that could grant you a commendation, while other parts of this tall tale are simply confusing. You will complete it in no time by following the right steps so you only have to complete the Dark Brethren Tall Tale once in Sea of Thieves.

Talk To The Castaway

All of the tall tales this season ask you to start off by talking with The Castaway at an outpost, then you must interact with the shelf on the far right that has the chain on the bottom shelf in order to vote for the tall tale.

This will spawn a cutscene with the castaway and Jack Sparrow, where he will then join you on your ship as you begin your next adventure.

Find The Coral Fortress

Once Jack Sparrow is on your ship you need to head down to your map table where he will help you find The Coral Fortress. It is actually off the northern edge of the map, right above ‘I’ and ‘J’ in case you are having a hard time locating it.

The waters on your journey will grow rougher the closer you get to this location, so be careful not to sink your boat. You will need to enter The Coral Fortress from the front and walk through the tunnel until you find a stone door with a crack in the center.

Enter The Room And Activate The Mural

Jack Sparrow will open the door for you and once you enter inside you will be able to find your first journal. It is located on the right-hand side of the room on top of the shipwreck, but look closely as it can be hard to miss.

You also need to activate the mural, which involves pulling three coral levers in a specific order. The first lever will be to the left of the door and then you can follow the wall to the right and pull the next two levers. This will reveal a mural of a shark on the wall and then you can jump into the water and head to the next area.

Follow Jack Sparrow And Make Your Way Through The Cave

You will follow Jack Sparrow through the underwater cave until you reach a rock door which he will open for you. There will be a journal along the way on the right side of the tunnel so keep your eyes peeled if you want to nab it.

Next, enter the next cave on land and use the geyser to launch yourself up to the second level. There will be a pulley here for you to activate which will swing the log over so you can cross to the other side.

The third journal will be sitting here on the ground, and it will be one of the easier journals to find. After this, you need to continue through the cave by climbing up a ladder to the top of a waterfall, and you should hope you don't encounter a beard error.

Follow Jack Sparrow By Jumping Into The Water

Jack Sparrow will jump into the water and slide down the waterfall, and you need to do the same. There isn’t really anything you need to do except continue down it until you are shot out into a new cavern.

This time you will encounter the Flying Dutchman and begin the leg of the tall tale known as The Chamber of Sorrow.

Activate The Mural And Climb Up The Flying Dutchman

The second mural can be found in this area and the first lever will be to your right on a rock if you are facing the Flying Dutchman. The next lever will be on a rock on the other side of the ship and then the last lever will be to the left near the woman with a waterfall coming out of her mouth. You can always swim around the area counterclockwise if you are having trouble finding them all.

Once you have revealed the mural then you can climb onto the Flying Dutchman which will begin the next set of dialogue with Sparrow.

Head Down Below And Pull The Dagger

Walk below the deck and find the map table which has a dagger planted on it. Interact with the dagger to attempt to pull it out, but Jack will stop you and take the dagger himself in a cut scene.

After this is done head back up to the deck as the Captain’s Quarters are now open to you.

Go To The Captain’s Quarters And Play The Organ

Head to the deck of the ship and go to the Captain’s Quarters, which will now be open for you to explore. Once you walk into the room the fifth journal will be sitting on a box to your left.

Jack Sparrow will be waiting at the far end of the room with sheet music in his hand, which you need to take. It is now time to play the organ, and the notes in front of you are pretty straightforward.

Basically, hit the keys from the middle section of the organ as they appear on the paper in front of you. You will know when you have done it as Jack Sparrow will throw in a piece of dialogue.

Defeat The Enemies

If you manage to successfully play the organ then you can head back up to the deck where you will face off against enemies from all sides, and they are much easier to beat compared to Captain Grimm. They will shoot at you and your best bet is to use the cannons in this situation.

After you have beaten them the next area will open up, so you can hop into the water and swim toward the Captain’s Quarters end of the Flying Dutchman to find the exit.

Cut The Ropes

Swim into the next area and then immediately dive down to find the next journal near the seabed. It will be in an open cage and it is fairly easy to see compared to some of the others.

Next, cut the underwater ropes with your sword that are holding the ship pieces underwater. This will allow them to rise to the top so you can jump across them and move along in the tall tale.

Uncover The Third Mural

Another journal exists in this area and it can be found by jumping across the shipwreck pieces until you can walk on land beneath a dock-like structure. It is quite dark, but the journal will be hidden here.

The next step is to activate the levers and from the journal position, you need to head to your left. The first one will be on the rockface, then head behind the waterfall, and the last lever is underwater all the way to the right just before the drop-off.

Activate The Pulley And Make Your Way Through The Caves

When you head back on land you will discover a pulley that you need to activate and it will lower a piece of the shipwreck and complete the conga line of pieces. Jump on them until you reach the exit, which will have a door that Jack will open for you.

Make your way through the caves until you reach the next cut scene.

Take The Siren Heart And Solve The Siren Puzzle

Jack will disappear through the wall and you will be prompted to pick up the Siren Heart which you need to place in one of the statues. Next, you have to solve the Siren Puzzle, which is the exact same concept as the puzzles you had to solve back in The Sunken Pearl Tall Tale.

Shoot the sirens to move their arms and once they are in the same position as the picture, then shoot the siren with the shell to complete the puzzle.

Complete The Next Siren Puzzle

Another siren puzzle will stand in your way, but this time the pictures are located beside each of the statues. You can stand on the shipwreck piece to shoot their arms into position.

The final siren statue you have to shoot cannot be accessed until you activate the pulley to raise the shipwreck up into position. Once you have shot it the waterfall will stop flowing and you can continue into the next area.

Activate The Fourth Mural And Solve The Next Siren Puzzle

Make your way through the next area, but be on the lookout for the levers to activate the next mural. The first lever is underneath the first broken mast, the second lever is on the rock wall across the second mast. The final lever requires you to go back across the second ship mast and immediately look at the rock to your left.

After you have done this you can head to the door and arrange the arms of the siren statues so that they are in the highest position. The statue with the shell is behind you across the way and you can shoot it with your gun.

Defeat The Enemies

Enter the next area which will begin the next leg of the tall tale called Deep into the Fortress. A bunch of enemies will spawn who you will be tasked with defeating, and it isn’t too hard of a fight.

Next, locate the journal on the right side of the room behind a green plant. It is not visible to the naked eye so it can be hard to spot if you are unsure where to look.

Cut Down The Door And Solve The Next Siren Puzzle

One tip for beginners is to maneuver through the next area and use the geyser to propel yourself onto the ledge, then take your sword to cut down the door. This will open up the next area where you will once again be greeted by a siren puzzle where the pictures are located near each of the statues.

Once you have solved the puzzle then the room will fill up with water and give you access to the next level of the room.

Head To The Next Area While Pulling The Levers For The Mural

After the room fills with water, look to the left of the door and you will find the next journal to add to your collection.

Next, travel to the right of the door until you see the first lever you need to pull, then head into the tunnel. Take it all the way to the next area and activate the pulley right inside the doorway. This will raise the mast from which you can jump across to pull the next lever.

The final lever is down in the water below along the edge of the rock wall, so just swim around the outer edge until you find it to reveal the mural.

Adjust The Ship Masts

You can adjust the ship masts so you can reach the top of the cavern where you will find another waterway. Jump into it and ride it all the way through as it will pop you out at the next portion of the tall tale called The Court Convenes.

However, once you reach this room make sure to look to your right as there is a journal hidden in the shadows.

Solve The Puzzle And Use The Key

A cut scene will ensue and once it is over, head over to the table and pick up the journal beside the chair. If you look to your right you will see a puzzle with spinnable blocks that you must turn to the right side in order to unlock the key.

The correct order from left to right is as follows:

  • Shark
  • Siren
  • Trident
  • Cannonballs
  • Ship

You can use the key on the Dead Man’s Chest behind the table and it will give you the Mysterious Parchment.

Defeat The Gold Hoarder

The final step is to partake in a huge boss battle called the Ritual of Thieves where you fight with Jack Sparrow against the Gold Hoarder and Davy Jones, as well as a variety of enemies who are easier than some of the hardest opponents. You will use the pulleys to give Jack supplies and there are plenty of tridents around the room to help with more difficult foes.

After they are defeated the tall tale is complete and you can head off on your next pirate adventure.
