The Witcher 3 is getting its current-gen update on December 14. With 4K resolutions, ray tracing, dynamic resolution scaling, and FSR and DLSS support, alongside Ultra-Plus graphics settings, it promises to be the definitive way to play The Witcher 3. It’s also adding a bunch of new features, such as more map filters, quick-casting magic signs, and best of all, a photo mode.
Photo modes are becoming increasingly common in video games these days. It’s gotten to the point where it’s sort of weird for an open-world game to not have a photo mode. There’s a bunch of budding digital photographers that are diving into video games not just to beat the bad guys and save the day, but also to take some very pretty photos while they’re doing it.
CD Projekt Red’s last game, Cyberpunk 2077, eventually got its own photo mode quite a while after the game’s launch. It’s been over seven years since the release of Witcher 3, and there have certainly been more than a few mods released over that time that add custom photo modes to the game, but this will be the first time Witcher 3 gets its own official photo mode.
In addition to a photo mode, the current-gen update will bring new camera angles for players to use in Witcher 3. Both the alternative camera modes and photo mode started out as experiments by CD Projekt Red designers that eventually became full features. You can choose to place the camera closer to Geralt for a more cinematic view or further away to make it easier to keep track of multiple opponents. And you can always go back to the default camera view whenever you want.
Keep an eye out for a photo mode contest coming soon after the release of Witcher 3's current-gen update! Expect the rules to be similar to Cyberpunk's photo mode contest, but perhaps less cat-related.
One of the few new releases to not feature a photo mode is God of War: Ragnarok, but just like with Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3, there's a mod for that.
