Animal Crossing: New Horizons doesn’t really mention this, but Jolly Redd the scammer and Tom Nook the landlord have history. In previous games, the tanuki tells the player that foxes can’t be trusted, and vaguely hints at some kind of “tragic” incident that transpired when he made the mistake of working with the canine. So now that Redd is selling his wares in New Horizons, fans are taking the opportunity to flesh out the backstory between the two animals.
New Horizons doesn’t mince words about Redd — when he appears, Isabelle warns the player of a “shady” individual who is now roaming your island. Still, if you want to fill up your museum with paintings and statues, you have to take a chance on Redd’s boat.
Nook may be a controversial figure for fans, but compared to Redd, he’s more trustworthy. At the same time, both animals are technically entrepreneurs who are trying their best to make some bells … their philosophies on how to do so just happen to differ. All of this information is catnip for ’shippers, who see the see the dynamics between Redd and Nook as fertile ground for setting up a volatile romance. Think, perhaps, something along the lines of Killing Eve or Hannibal — that is, characters that represent different ends of the moral spectrum. But despite their differences, they just can’t seem to stay away from one another. At the very least, even if they don’t portray the characters as ex-lovers, fans love to highlight the rivalry between the two, as you’ll see below.
