Home Run Contest finally comes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

During Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai announced the return of the Home Run Contest mode. The director also announced that it will likely be the final mode added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Home Run Contest is a beloved mode from previous Smash games. The idea is that players start on a platform with a sentient Sandbag, deal as much damage to it as they can over 10 seconds, and then hit it with the Home Run Bat item. The Sandbag will then fly through the air, along a track. The higher the Sandbag’s damage percentage, the farther it flies. When the Sandbag finally lands, the game will reward players with a sign to commemorate their landing.

Home Run Contest isn’t terribly different from past versions, but it has some fancy visual upgrades for its Switch debut. I also supports two players at once, a feature the series debuted in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Friends can team up to battle the Sandbag together, allowing it to reach even greater distances through the power of friendship.

Home Run Contest comes as part of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 5.0, which also sees the release of Banjo & Kazooie as playable fighters. Nintendo will release the patch today, Sept. 4.
