Divinity: Original Sin developer Larian Studios started teasing a new project on its official website, a teaser that may have already given away the project. Signs point to Larian’s next project being Baldur’s Gate 3.
While the website itself is coy about what the “III” logo could be, metadata discovered within a video file contains multiple references to Baldur’s Gate 3, publisher Wizards of the Coast, and Dungeons & Dragons. Baldur’s Gate is set in the Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting. The video file also contains the phrase “Gather your party,” an oft-heard refrain from the original Baldur’s Gate games.
The revelation that Larian could be working on a new Baldur’s Gate affirms a rumor from 2018. Last year a member of the RPG Codex forums posted that Larian founder and CEO Swen Vincke had “acquired the Baldur’s Gate license.”
With just days to go before E3 2019 and a long list of press conferences preceding it, it likely won’t be long until we hear something concrete. In the meantime, we’ve reached out to Larian for comment.
The Baldur’s Gate games were originally developed by BioWare and published by Interplay and Black Isle Studios. The first, Baldur’s Gate, was released in 1998 for Mac and Windows PC. BioWare released a sequel, Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadow of Amn, in 2000. Enhanced editions of those games were later released by Beamdog’s Overhaul Games division.
