EA sending out alpha invites for new Plants vs. Zombies shooter

The next Plants vs. Zombies game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One may be coming sooner than expected. Publisher Electronic Arts has already invited people to play a new game, codenamed Picnic, from the developers of the Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare games, said people who say they’ve received such invitations via email.

Picnic will get a “close alpha playtest,” according to screenshots of the email. Additional screenshots of a registration page indicate the alpha playtest will take place Aug. 1-6, and will feature at least two gameplay modes called Turf Takeover and Team Vanquish. We’ve reached out to EA for more details.

A new Plants vs. Zombies shooter for consoles isn’t a surprise. EA announced in February that it plans to release a new Plants vs. Zombies as well as Need for Speed titles during the publisher’s fiscal year, which ends April 2020.

EA has released two Plants vs. Zombies-themed shooters so far: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare in 2014 and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 in 2016.

Last week, EA and original Plants vs. Zombies developer PopCap announced Plants vs. Zombies 3 for mobile devices. The game is currently playable as a free-to-play pre-alpha release on Android devices.
