Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which launched 10 years ago, is coming back with a remastered edition for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. No release date was announced, but it’s coming later this year.
Written by Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis, and starring all of the original cast (including supporting and side characters), Ghostbusters: The Video Game was one of the best movie adaptations of the preceding console generation, when that sub-genre largely faded out. It was one of the last games developed by the now-defunct Terminal Reality.
Saber Interactive and Mad Dog Games, the developer and publisher of the NBA Playgrounds franchise, now control the rights to the game and are working together on the remaster.
In Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered, players will take on the role of an unnamed new recruit to the paranormal pest control experts. Naturally, New York gets overrun again by ghosts and ghouls in a cleanup adventure dotted with callbacks to the 1984 movie and its 1989 sequel.
But the story did hold up on its own, and benefitted greatly from not only Ramis and Aykroyd’s voice work, but also Bill Murray’s, Ernie Hudson’s, Annie Potts’ and even William Atherton’s (Mr. dickless-here Walter Peck of the EPA). Hudson in particular cracked off a pitch-perfect line inside the game’s Museum of History job.
And the gameplay, which featured proton packs and PKE meters and all the tools of the Ghostbusters universe, was sound and very enjoyable. The co-operative multiplayer was an overlooked and underrated component of the whole package, too. Filling up those lobbies again will be a great value-add for the remaster.
