NERO Checkpoints in the Cascade Wilderness
1 – Little Bear Lake
The first NERO Checkpoint you come across is Little Bear Lake. You’ll find this one during the story mission ‘Bugged The Hell Out’. The generator in this camp is right by the NERO building, but if you’re having trouble finding it, look for the electrical wires and pole that they’re connected to. At the end of the street you’ll see a repair truck with a fuel cannister sitting on the back of it.
Take this cannister back to the generator and fill up the tank. Climb onto the roof of the NERO building and cut down the speakers (you’ll also want to remove them from the small ticket booth as you enter the area). Return to the generator and push square on your controller to turn on the power. Inside the electronic doors you’ll find the NERO injector.
2 – Horse Lake
The second NERO checkpoint in Cascade Wilderness is Horse Lake which is near the top of the Cascade wilderness map, on the main road out of Cascade and into Belknap. It’s best to target this NERO checkpoint in the day, when the horde that sleep in the train cart just by the checkpoint will be hibernating.
Firstly, you’ll notice a car parked on the hill by the locked gate. You’ll want to push the car down the hill by holding square. Once the car is pushed against the fence, locate the nearby gas cannister and climb onto the car to reach the roof of the NERO building. The generator is inside the chained-off area, and you’ll need to land inside after you jump from the roof. Make sure you take down all the speakers here otherwise you’ll find yourself trapped with an angry swarm coming down on you. Once the lights turn green enter the building and collect your next NERO injector.
3 – Old Pioneer Cemetery
Head north to the Old Pioneer Cemetery (near The Caldera Reservoir) and follow the road until you come across the NERO camp. There’s a few Freakers located at the back of the camp feasting on the corpse of a deceased NERO officer. You’ll see a cannister by them that you’ll need to fuel the generator. Kill the Freakers and collect the fuel can, then take this back to the generator by the fence and refuel it. Don’t forget to kill the speakers before you turn on the generator. This will unlock the doors and allow you entrance into the checkpoint.
NERO Checkpoints in the Belknap Wilderness
4 – Marion Forks Tunnel
As you enter Belknap Wilderness through the northmost tunnel, you’ll exit straight into the back garden of a NERO checkpoint. Here, you’ll immediately see a large military truck. The item you need, the gas cannister, is in the back of this vehicle.
Fuel up the generator (it’s right by the truck too) after destroying the speakers to prevent any unwanted attention. As you start the generator you’ll be told that the fuse is blown and that you’ll need to replace it before you can get inside the trailer. A blue search box will appear on the map and you’ll be guided to a white trailer with a working fuse inside. Find the open fuse panel on the side of the first military trailer and fix the electronics. You’ll be inside in no time.
5 – Iron Butte Pass
This NERO checkpoint is located in the south of Belknap by the road you take if you’re heading into Iron Butte. You’ll be deep in Ripper territory here so take down any marauders lingering in the area before you get to work.
The gas cannister you need is located by the entrance of the NERO camp amongst a pile of discarded rubbish. Take out the speakers and then follow the tell-tale cables to locate the generator. This one will need to be fixed before it can unlock the doors, so make sure you have a little bit of scrap on you for the repairs. Once you’re inside the trailer the injector is yours!
NERO Checkpoints In Lost Lake
6 – Old Sawmill
The first NERO checkpoint in the Lost Lake region is at the Old Sawmill. It’s located at the south of the Lost Lake map, almost directly opposite Iron Mike’s encampment. As you arrive at the sawmill you’ll be able to hear the guttural moans of a horde very close by. It’s imperative that you kill all the speakers here, including the ones located on the spotlights overlooking the checkpoint. If you don’t, prepare for a very difficult fight.
Search the tents by the right side of the camp and you’ll find a fuel cannister. If you’re having trouble, you can use your survival instincts to help locate key items within these tents, including the cannister. The generator itself is in the middle of the camp by a large rock. Add the fuel and you’ll be granted entry into the trailer.
7 – Santium Tunnel
From Nero checkpoint #6 (the Old Sawmill), drive southwest down the road until you enter an infestation zone. NERO checkpoint #7 is right by the tunnel that leads to the Highway 97 region. The first thing you’ll want to do is clear the infestation. Mainly, because it’s much easier to work on the generator without Freakers swarming you; and secondly, because this generator has a broken fuse and the replacement is inside the nest on the wall by the tunnel.
Find the tent and the fuel cannister inside, then carry the cannister around to the back of the camp. You’re looking for a small ridge in the landscape where there’s a tear in the chain-link fence. Here, you can climb up into the main area of the checkpoint and find the generator. Fuel up the machine, take down the speakers, then replace the fuse and you’ll be inside the checkpoint in no time.
8 – Rouge Tunnel
As you head towards the Iron Butte region through the tunnel to the west of Lost Lake, you’ll drive straight into a NERO checkpoint. Depending on your game progress there may be a ripper ambush set up here, so take down all of the cult members before you begin the task of restoring power to the camp.
Look for an abandoned SUV near the NERO trailer, and retrieve the fuel cannister from the back of it. Then make you way to the generator at the other end of the checkpoint. Remember, if you’re having trouble locating the generator, follow the cables above your head. Cut down or shoot the speakers set up around the camp, then fill up the generator which will grant you access to the injector.
NERO Checkpoints In Crater Lake
9 – Spruce Lake
To the northwest of the Crater Lake region is Spruce Lake and NERO checkpoint #9. Before you can even think of locating the generator or fuel, you’re going to have to clear the marauders who have claimed this checkpoint as their ambush camp. Once you’ve taken them all out, head back to the tents to the left of the entrance to collect the fuel cannister and fill up the generator. The generator is just off-centre of the camp, if you’re having trouble finding it follow the tell-tale electrical cables.
Fill up the generator and push the button only to be told that the fuse is broken. You’ll now need to source a replacement, but thankfully a small blue search area will open and the controller will vibrate if you look in the right direction. Once you’ve located the fuse (which is up the hill to the west of the entrance, by the side of a tent) repair the generator and you’ll be able to enter the NERO trailers.
10 – Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway
Located in the northern reaches of Crater Lake amongst the snowy mountains you’ll find the Volcanic Legacy NERO checkpoint. Clear out any enemies that may be in the camp and set about locating the fuel. You’ll notice a large yellow school bus which you’ll want to get behind, and you can find the fuel cannister just behind this bus. Head to the generator by following the wires and fuel up the tank. Jump onto the buildings and cut down the speakers, shooting the one that you can’t physically reach. After the area is secured head back to the generator and turn on the power.
NERO Checkpoints in Highway 97
#11 – Chemult Community College
This will probably be on the of the last NERO checkpoints that you visit due it being locked off for the majority of the main game. Find the college on the very west of highway 97, bordering the east of Crater Lake. When you arrive in this area you’ll notice a number of infestation zones and one large horde that lives here. In order to make this checkpoint easier to salvage it’s best to burn down the nests and take down the horde. Check out our horde guide if you’re having trouble.
As you enter the area you’ll notice a fuel cannister by the side of a small security booth. Take this all the way to the NERO checkpoint on the other side of the college sports field. There are other fuel cannisters inside the tents set up along the way, so don’t fret if you can’t find this particular cannister.
Once you’ve refuelled the tank you’ll need to find a replacement fuse which you can track using clues around the environment. Specifically, the fuse is in one of the tents so you’ll find it if you systematically check each one. Return the new fuse to the panel on the side wall of the NERO trailer, then return to the generator in the centre of the camp and turn on the power to enter the building.
#12 – Pillette Bridge
Travel to the southwest portion of the Highway 97 region, following the large tarmac road until you reach the NERO checkpoint at the very end. Start by finding the fuel cannister which is by the security booth at the entrance of the checkpoint, then carry it around the chain-link fence until you reach a gap. The generator is just through here. Fuel it up and take the usual precautions of dismantling the speakers before you push that green button and turn on the power. As you complete the final NERO checkpoint you’ll finish the World’s End Storyline which also unlocks the ‘World’s End’ achievement. Congratulations!
