Initially revealed just over a year ago, A Giant Problem by indie developer Critical Games was originally planned for an early access release the same year. That didn’t happen but today the studio has settled on a date, bringing the title to Steam in a couple of weeks.
A wave-based action videogame where you play as the titular giant who needs to fight off lots of little enemies. Set in a fairytale world for once you’re not getting attacked by angry, pitchfork-wielding villagers. Instead, your job is to defend the village from an onslaught of goblins, trolls, wizards and other magical beings intent on stealing your gold.
To do this you get to smash through these foes with a variety of weapons, objects, and magic, throw a boulder in their faces or use some fire/lightning magic to cause some mayhem. While A Giant Problem is a single-player title your character doesn’t have to defend the village alone. You’ll be able to command the villagers to the front line, directing counter-attacks whilst building and repairing defences.
The initial early access release will include all the base assets and abilities needed and in a playable state. The team notes that: “the game is not completely balanced, nor are all of the planned features and modes implemented.” When it comes to future development Critical Games plans to add four to six new maps, additional enemies, a third type of magic, a Party Mode and character customization.
Compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Valve Index headsets the studio has also considered players who want to record their gameplay, including a second streamable camera that can be controlled with the mouse and keyboard to improve the viewing experience for all, whether the audience is local or online.
A Giant Problem is slated to launch on 1st April 2020 – a day which VRFocus is always suspicious of – on Steam. It will also be available through Humble Bundle and Itch.io.
