Immortals of Aveum is a magic shooter game that casts a spell on PS5

First-person shooter fans have a new no-guns game to get their teeth into.

While punters are waiting for November’s blockbuster Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 release, Electronic Arts are hoping blaster fans will take a chance on Immortals of Aveum.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X original title features Harry Potter-style magic instead of mechanical weapons.

And it’s pretty good.

The makers at Ascendant Studios reckon the spell-based combat will help the hit stand out from the usual bullet-laden titles.

And they’re not wrong, this is frantic fighting, as manic as any single-player CoD firefight, all done with colour blasts from the fingers instead.

You take on the role of Jak, a Battlemage in a fantasy universe engulfed in magic, rife with conflict, and on the edge of the abyss.

Players experience a visceral and cinematic story-driven game where they’ll slowly master three different colours of magic – red, blue and green.

It’s all about chaining together differing spells and counters in a series of attacks to take down hordes of baddies while bouncing around a rather visually impressive, colourful world.

It’s faced-paced, well acted and packed full of thrilling fun.

And while it’s certainly not the best FPS we’ve ever encountered, it will scratch that itch until the big boys come out to play in the run-up to Christmas.

Gamers should enjoy its change of pace and it’s a shame there was no attempt at a multiplayer as I suspect that’d be this game’s shining mode.

VERDICT 3.5/5
